Are you a girl or a boy inside?

Sex, gender, and orientation are a bit more complex than what one might think. Many people don’t even know the differences between sex and gender and use them interchangeably. Hence let us start off from differentiating the two.

Sex is assigned by doctors to individuals by looking at their genitalia at the time of their birth. While there is debate among doctors upon how genitalia should look.

While gender is what the individual themselves identify with. It might happen that someone is born with the male genitalia but still identifies themself as female.

Now let us move on to define some other gender-related confusing terms. Remember there is a lot of debate on these definitions. We will tell you what is generally accepted by doctors.

Cisgender – A cisgender is someone whose sex matches their gender. Hence if you are born with the female genitalia and you identify yourself as a female then you are a cisgender.

Cishet – A cishet is the short term for cisgender and heterosexual. Though “straight” is not a gender term we still liked to clear things out.

Trans – A transgender is someone whose gender doesn’t match the sex they were assigned at birth by the doctors. For example, if the doctor assigns an individual as female but she identifies herself as a male then she is a transgender.

Genderqueer – A genderqueer is someone who may identify with both, neither or a combination of both of the genders. These people may feel at times to be a female with a male’s lifestyle preferences while at other times they will identify themselves as female having a normal lifestyle. It is a highly complicated thing to understand but people like them do exist.

Intersex – A person who is termed as intersex is someone who is born with ambiguous genitalia. For instance, someone may be born with male genitalia on the outside but the internal anatomy matches more of a typical female one.

There are many other important gender-related terms that we will discuss in some of our other posts. Play the quiz and don’t forget to share it with your friends and family.

“I am no bird; and no net ensnares me: I am a free human being with an independent will.”
― Charlotte Brontë, Jane Eyre

“When a man gives his opinion, he’s a man. When a woman gives her opinion, she’s a bitch.”
― Bette Davis

“I hate to hear you talk about all women as if they were fine ladies instead of rational creatures. None of us want to be in calm waters all our lives.”
― Jane Austen, Persuasion

“I am not an angel,’ I asserted; ‘and I will not be one till I die: I will be myself. Mr. Rochester, you must neither expect nor exact anything celestial of me – for you will not get it, any more than I shall get it of you: which I do not at all anticipate.”
― Charlotte Brontë, Jane Eyre

“Women have served all these centuries as looking glasses possessing the magic and delicious power of reflecting the figure of man at twice its natural size.”
― Virginia Woolf, A Room of One’s Own

“A woman knows very well that, though a wit sends her his poems, praises her judgment, solicits her criticism, and drinks her tea, this by no means signifies that he respects her opinions, admires her understanding, or will refuse, though the rapier is denied him, to run through the body with his pen.”
― Virginia Woolf, Orlando

“To call woman the weaker sex is a libel; it is man’s injustice to woman. If by strength is meant brute strength, then, indeed, is woman less brute than man. If by strength is meant moral power, then woman is immeasurably man’s superior. Has she not greater intuition, is she not more self-sacrificing, has she not greater powers of endurance, has she not greater courage? Without her, man could not be. If nonviolence is the law of our being, the future is with woman. Who can make a more effective appeal to the heart than woman?”
