Gender identity is one of the most popular conversations nowadays. It has gained a lot more attention in the last few years than it has in centuries. We can see several ongoing debates on gender, identity, and gender identity literally all over the internet. This is because gender is involved in almost every sphere of our life, be it conversations, pays, workplaces, relationships, or the products we buy. Gender identity is the identity assigned to one at their birth based on their external genitalia. For ages, gender has been nothing but a binary with no room for anything beyond the two established genders. This binary has been a norm which still is but we have come to realize that is a problem.
The first “bathroom bill” banning people from public restrooms that do not correspond to their assigned biological sex was signed into the law as the Public Facilities Privacy and Security Act by Governor Pat McCrory of North Carolina. Though first of its own kind and many other such legislations has been controversial since the very initiation of public restrooms in the 19th century. Several states within the U.S have tried to pass such bills into law but have been failing. With so many hate crimes towards the queer community especially transgender individuals, it is necessary to assess this conversation which has been long overdue. It is necessary to comprehend things, act with sense and knowledge rather than prejudice because till there is absolute eradication of misconceptions there will always be a question on trans identity and their future.
