Are you Retarded?

Statements such as “that’s so retarded” or “don’t be such a retard” are common on campus, and I often hear them mentioned in passing. When I hear a certain word being used by someone I am conversing with, I will normally ask him or her to choose a new word. I receive a variety of responses on a regular basis. Many people express remorse by saying, “Oh, sorry, I meant foolish,” or something similar. Another explanation is that the r-word is no longer linked with persons who have impairments and is simply a synonym for dumb, and as such, it is appropriate to use. These responses, in my opinion, illustrate that there is a much broader issue at hand than the use of the r-word. There is a fundamental misunderstanding of the meaning of the word, as well as the reasons why it is offensive in the first instance.

Since the word has become widely used in informal speech, it has become more difficult to discern the relationship between the original meaning of the word and the contemporary informal usage of the word. Therefore, it may be difficult to comprehend why the word is still considered offensive in today’s society. According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, the definition of the word retarded is “Offensive: sluggish or limited in intellectual or emotional development.” For a brief period of time, the medical term “mental retardation” was used to designate a person who suffered from an intellectual handicap. However, since then, the term “intellectual disability” has largely displaced the phrase “learning disability” because it is more accurate and welcoming. The use of the r-word is a discriminatory slur that contributes to unfavorable preconceptions about individuals with disabilities. It can be harmful when addressed at a person with a disability or when used as a synonym for the words “dumb” or “stupid,” for example. When used in this manner, it is akin to implying that persons with impairments are illiterate. You may feel bored while searching for the real meaning of the term and you should start playing this personality quiz in order to relax a bit. Aside from that, the true meaning of the sentence is lost because the r-word has an entirely different connotation than the words “stupid” or “dumb,” respectively. There are numerous other terms that can be used in place of the r-word that will more accurately convey the appropriate message as well.

In a recent circumstance, someone used the r-word, and I chose not to speak out because I felt uncomfortable. I afterwards regretted not speaking up. After that, I spent a significant amount of time reflecting on the interaction since I was disappointed that I had said nothing. While refraining from using the term “retard” is a vital part of the solution, it is equally important to speak out against the use of this damaging term. When I tell individuals that I am offended by the usage of this word, many of them don’t understand that they are being offensive in the first place. By speaking up and informing others that the word is insulting to me and many other people, I am raising awareness about the issue rather than tacitly supporting it through my silence. Hopefully, this will lead to others refraining from using the term and instead becoming champions for it. The greater the amount of awareness that can be raised, the better.
