Can You Guess The Most Popular Movies of All Time From a Single Sentence Summary?

The confluence of two brilliant minds, Stanley Kubrick and sci-fi visionary Arthur C Clarke, resulted in the creation of the best film ever produced. Clarke’s name came up as a prospective writer for Kubrick’s planned sci-fi epic, and Kubrick said, ‘From what I’ve heard, he’s a nut who lives in a tree in India someplace,’ while the names of Isaac Asimov, Robert A Heinlein, and Ray Bradbury were mentioned as possible writers for the film. The two met when Clarke was really living in Ceylon (rather than India or a tree), yet the two became fast friends and crafted an epic tale of technical advancement and calamity (hello, HAL) that is rooted in humanity, in all its glory, frailty, courage and craziness. An audience of stoners was enthralled by the film’s eye-candy Star Gate scene and groundbreaking graphics, and it became their favorite movie. 2001 could have slipped into oblivion if it weren’t for them, but it’s difficult to think it would have remained there for long. More than 50 years after its release, Kubrick’s disturbingly clinical vision of the future – complete with artificial intelligence – nevertheless feels prescient. —Philip de Semlyen, Ph.D.
