With the story set in Europe that resembles today and 1940, it talks about a German expat George played by Franz Rogowski who plans to escape Paris before the arrival of encroaching Nazi-esque fascists. When he arrives to the city Marseilles he becomes friends with his former comrade’s African son played by Lilien Batman and wife played by Maryam Zaree. George assumes the identity of a dead author Weidel, whose belongings he acquires and whose documentation permitting travel to Mexico await him at the port city’s embassy.

He ends up falling in love with a young woman, Marie played by Paula Beer, searching for her missing husband. She repeatedly mistakes George for her husband as she wants to be back with him despite of having an affair with another man. A forlorn romantic reverie about identity, regret, trauma and rebirth, it is also a work that confronts issues of personal and national consciousness. Written and directed by Christian Petzold, it’s an entrancing and inherently mysterious ghost story that’s both timeless and, sadly, of our particular moment.

“But if it matters to you, you’ll be able to choose Gryffindor over Slytherin. The Sorting Hat takes your choice into account.”
“Really?”
“It did for me,” said Harry.
He had never told any of his children that before, and he saw the wonder in Albus’s face when he said it.”

“Don’t forget to give Neville our love!’ Ginny told James as she hugged him.
‘Mum! I can’t give a professor love!’
‘But you know Neville-‘
James rolled his eyes.
‘Outside, yeah, but at school he’s Professor Longbottom, isn’t he? I can’t walk into Herbology and give him love….”

“Which way did they go, Peeves?” Filch was saying. “Quick, tell me.”
“Say ‘please.'”
“Don’t mess with me, Peeves, now where did they go?”
“Shan’t say nothing if you don’t say please,” said Peeves in his annoying singsong voice.
“All right- PLEASE.”
“NOTHING! Ha haaa! Told you I wouldn’t say nothing if you didn’t say please! Ha ha! Haaaaaa!” And they heard the sound of Peeves whooshing away and Filch cursing in rage.”
― J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone

“Slowly, very slowly, he sat up, and as he did so he felt more alive, and more aware of his own living body than ever before. Why had he never appreciated what a miracle he was, brain and nerve and bounding heart? It would all be gone…or at least, he would be gone from it. His breath came slow and deep, and his mouth and throat were completely dry, but so were his eyes.”
― J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
