1.The Lighthouse
Robert Eggers’ “The Lighthouse” is about two men who are tempted by the light in complete darkness. A work of period-piece insanity, the movie is starts on a New England rock covered in crashing-wave mist and bombarded with torrential rain. Starring Robert Pattinson as Ephraim Winslow and Willem Dafoe as Thomas Wake, the film explores the tension between these two lighthouse keepers over the latter’s possessiveness of the lighthouse.
The cinematography of the film is exceptional as it is shot in 4:3 black-and-white, giving the action appear like a weathered cold photograph when pieced together with the ornate storybook dialogue. The story is different as it deals with guild, shame and greed, which brings out the spite within. Dafoe’s curse and Pattinson’s wild-eyes lunacy match on a level of creativity that no one can imagine. Eggers make this tale one of the most haunting cautionary tale that shakes the souls of the audience by being unforgettably oblique.
- Marriage Story
Noah Baumbach’s “Marriage Story” shows us the chaos a divorce causes in a marriage with so much insight and utmost authenticity. It shows how it disrupts life, not only the present and the future but also the past. The separation of Brooklyn theatre director Charlie played by Adam Driver and actress Nicole played by Scarlett Johansson was a mutually agreed decision but soon it turns out to become a legal war, which is much more traumatising than costly.
The despicable war is carried out by the self-absorbed lawyers, leaving the couple’s young son Henry played Azhy Robertson hanging in the middle of it all. The audience can feel the pain and fury over the battle for custody with the help of sharp writing an visuals. The truth the shows has never been showed before, as it successfully manages to present how something that was once so good is nothing more but an empty vessel made of resentment and ruin. The credit for the success of the film goes to the remarkable performance of Driver and Johansson which make it incredibly real.
