What Artistic Hobby Should You Take Up?

We’re sure you’re itching to stretch your imaginative muscles after a drab Christmas. You’ve probably spent the holidays abusing your Netflix subscription and vegging out on the couch, and now it’s time to put your Netflix subscription to good use.

Starting a new creative hobby (mostly at home for the time being, of course) could be just what you need to re-energize, refresh your batteries, and reignite your imagination in preparation for whatever 2021 has in store. We spoke with eight creatives for this article about the positive impact their hobbies have had on their lives, and we included their tips and suggestions to help you do the same. While this is pre-lockdown guidance, all of it is still applicable in 2021.

1st Lego

A tactile hobby can help people who spend a lot of time gazing at a computer unwind. “For me, Lego building gives me a sense of zen,” says web designer Richard Carter. “I enjoy building because it relaxes me… it’s stimulating to use my hands to make something tangible rather than on a computer.”

Building Legos, on the other hand, isn’t just a physical practise. “It can also be a mental task,” Carter says, “figuring out how to reproduce a texture or form, or manipulating Lego bricks to achieve the model you want to make.”

Carter’s pastime has also spilled into his professional life. “I have a bowl of Lego parts in my office as well: when I’m stuck on a problem, a fast rustle of bricks typically gives me the break I need to solve it while also aiding my concentration.” Clients have also begun to play during meetings, indicating that it is catching on!”

02. Crochet and knitting
Do you think knitting is just for the elderly? Then you’re completely incorrect. This artistic pastime is enjoyed by people of all ages all over the world, and Alicia Ramirez, a Mexican web designer living in Canada, is one of them.

But it wasn’t love at first sight for her. “While my mother tried to teach me to knit when I was a kid, I found it tedious,” she admits. “I didn’t give it another shot until 2006 or 2007.” This time, I couldn’t get enough.”

What’s even better is that you can do it pretty much anywhere. “I knit or crochet whenever I feel like it,” Ramiraz explains, “usually while watching TV or listening to podcasts.” “I also catch up with a group of yarn crafters once a week for a daily ‘knit night.'”
