What Gives You Your Daily Inner Strength?

In spite of the boom in the self-help industry, we see a constant rise in the number of mental health issues. It begs the question is the self-help industry really helping or adding to the problem? The simple answer is both Yes and No. Let me explain. The self-help industry just like any other industry runs on profits. Now think for a moment, if a majority of the problem really becomes successful in their lives then who will consume their content? It is similar to the pharmaceutical industry. Both of these industries’ profits depend upon the misery of the person. They always try to make you a regular customer of their products. Now don’t get me wrong I am not saying that they have not helped the society. They have tremendously helped the society but somewhere, someone got greedy by seeing the profits and their goals got misaligned.

Talking especially about the self-help industry it all started out with a very noble cause to make people realize their true potential. At that time selling books were one of the most viable way to get to their audience. The profit margins were slim and hence anybody who went into it had a clear goal of helping their readers.

With the boom of the internet, things have changed drastically. There are multiple ways by which one could reach its potential audience. Any product could be scaled infinitely with the help of the internet. This had turned them greedy and they are now focussing only on their profits. Most of them will only address the very basics of a particular problem. The problem with only addressing those basics is that the person gets excited and he/she feels that now they are on the path to success. They are different and are part of some kind of an elite group. While in reality, they are just ‘action faking’. Their gurus have still not explained the various layers of the problem and have oversimplified it. With oversimplification, the audience feels that they have grasped the idea and now they could apply it in their real-life but the fact is they could not do it with that half-knowledge.

Knowing the real truth of ourselves and accepting that we are weak and working towards it very painful and nobody really wants to go down that road. You might know it but the fact is that we all are running after some sort of secrets while all our questions could be answered by questioning ourselves. As for the secrets they simply don’t exist.

“All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.

From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
A light from the shadows shall spring;
Renewed shall be blade that was broken,
The crownless again shall be king.”
― J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring

“Life will break you. Nobody can protect you from that, and living alone won’t either, for solitude will also break you with its yearning. You have to love. You have to feel. It is the reason you are here on earth. You are here to risk your heart. You are here to be swallowed up. And when it happens that you are broken, or betrayed, or left, or hurt, or death brushes near, let yourself sit by an apple tree and listen to the apples falling all around you in heaps, wasting their sweetness. Tell yourself you tasted as many as you could.”
― Louise Erdrich, The Painted Drum

“I hate to hear you talk about all women as if they were fine ladies instead of rational creatures. None of us want to be in calm waters all our lives.”
― Jane Austen, Persuasion

“If you want to forget something or someone, never hate it, or never hate him/her. Everything and everyone that you hate is engraved upon your heart; if you want to let go of something, if you want to forget, you cannot hate.”
― C. JoyBell C.
