What Kind of Pretty Are You?

During the eight year presidency of George W. Bush, many people wondered whether he was stupid, but the truth is, he was in the top 10 percent of the population in terms of intelligence, as his IQ was above 120. It has been observed by the ones close to him that he is just not mentally present when it it is the time to think or make a decision. He was described as “glib, incurious and a result of ill-informed” by his loyal speechwriter, David Frum. He was also accused of lacking intellectual depth by Joe Scarborough, political advisor and former former Republican congressman, and what makes his claims more credible is Bush’s description of his thinking style as “not very critical”.

This kind of behaviour for a person with high IQ might surprise you, but in alll honesty it applies to more people than we think. This incongruity has been struggled for 15 years by Keith Stanovich who is a professor of human development and applied psychology at the University of Toronto, Canada. He doesn’t think that there is anything inappropriate about it. There are several mental faculties that IQ tests can measure; including logic, abstract reasoning, learning ability and working-memory capacity. But all these tests do not work well, when one needs to measure the ability of making judgements in real-life situations. One of the primary reason behind the test’s incapacitation to do so is that they don’t have the ability to assess certain things like a a person’s ability to critically weigh up information, or whether an individual can override the intuitive cognitive biases that lead us astray.
“They say that when you’re really in love, the world becomes gossamer and gorgeous, but in my experience the world gets grimy, and the love object is in stark relief from the surroundings. This is love, a pretty thing on an ugly street.”
Daniel Handler, Adverbs

“He thought that fat boys were probably only allowed to love pretty girls inside. If he told anyone how he felt (not that he had anyone to tell), that person would probably laugh until he had a heart-attack.”
Stephen King, It

“What every man should desire is an ugly woman with a beautiful heart, not a beautiful woman with an ugly heart.”
Michael Bassey Johnson Legend

“She’s pretty in a way that distracts me just like she did in the Skiz ring. No, pretty’s not the right word. Beautiful.”
Marie Lu, Uglies

“That’s the worst thing they do to you, to any of you. Whatever those brain lesions are all about, the worst damage is done before they even pick up the knife: You’re all brainwashed into believing you’re ugly.”
Scott Westerfeld, Love Letters to the Dead

“Because I think that by beauty, you don’t just mean something that’s pretty. You mean something that makes us human.”

Elizabeth George, The Journey to the East

“Pretty’ doesn’t mean ‘good,’ you know, Geneva. Real life isn’t like fairy tales. ‘Pretty’ simply means that by accident you’ve got things arranged on your outside in an extra-pleasing manner. It doesn’t tell a thing about your inside.”
Natalie Babbitt Lady Maggie’s Secret Scandal

“That is just what life is when it is beautiful and happy – a game! Naturally, one can also do all kinds of other things with it, make a duty of it, or a battleground, or a prison, but that does not make it any prettier…”
Hermann Hesse, The Great Hand Book of Quotes

“People are prettiest when they smile with joy.”
Debasish Mridha M.D. Throwing Shadows

“I am convinced that “all ladies are not the same”. Some have pretty faces, others have beautiful characters. Some have facial make-ups, others have mental make-ups!”
Israelmore Ayivor, Soulmates, By Chance

“It is sometimes necessary to use unnecessary words like thank you and please just to make life prettier.”
E.L. Konigsburg, Fingersmith

“She was not the sort of woman guys settle for. She was the one they lust after and strive for. She was the one who ruins other people’s relationships simply by existing, but she will always be surmounted as guys come to realize the virtues of the approachable girl next door. She was, in brief, too pretty to be trusted or had.”
Thomm Quackenbush, Vampire Academy
