What Makes People Jealous Of You?

Envy, jealousy, and shame are so closely linked that many times you will not be able to differentiate them. It is also challenging, especially in relationships because multiple factors are at play and it becomes hard to determine which one causes what. Our inability to differentiate among them can also happen for simple reasons like not knowing what do the terms actually mean. Since they sound so similar, we often use these terms interchangeably while they might have certain nuances. For example, jealousy and envy are often used interchangeably but they have slight differences. Jealousy comes from the fear of losing what we already have. For example, in romantic relationships, a girl might behave, due to her inadequacy, in ways that could make her boyfriend more jealous. While envying comes from the desire to get what others possess, for example, money, and fame. If you feel jealous and envy for longer periods of time then it is a sign of underlying unaddressed shame. It should be addressed in order to get over it.

You might not have realized it though but jealousy and envying start off from a very young age. The most common one being envying of siblings to get the love of parents. It also happens between the child and the same-sex parent for the love of the opposite-sex parents. You might feel that they it is trivial but they could significantly impact the child’s mental health for which he/she might feel inadequate for their entire life. People with such troubled childhood are also at the risk of getting into a depression since they already suffer from the feeling of being worthless since childhood. If that doesn’t get checked at the time it may have severe consequences. These childhood experiences are the reason behind several mental health patients.

These are very complex issues and one could only solve them if one wants to. Most of the time these things go undetected and create havoc later on in our life. Most of the times you could involve people from your close relationships to solve your issues.

“I am convinced that the jealous, the angry, the bitter and the egotistical are the first to race to the top of mountains. A confident person enjoys the journey, the people they meet along the way and sees life not as a competition. They reach the summit last because they know God isn’t at the top waiting for them. He is down below helping his followers to understand that the view is glorious where ever you stand.”

“I couldn’t look at her. I’d been jealous and hurt, and I had dragged Liv into the middle of my own broken mess of a life. All because I thought Lena didn’t love me anymore. But I was stupid, and I was wrong. Lena loved me so much, she was willing to risk everything to save me.
I had given up on Lena, after she had refused to give up on me. I owed her my life. It was as simple as that.”

“You know I can’t do that. Pete’s probably already spent a ton of money. He’s a nice guy. I can’t
just bail–”
Pete’s not as nice as you think,” Daniel grumbled.
I laughed. “Are you jealous? Pete’s just a friend–”
Daniel grabbed me by the hips. “Of course I’m jealous, Gracie. You just told me that you love me
but you are going out with another guy. But this is more important than my jealousy. If I’m
staying here, then you have to stay in. I’ve got enough to keep my eye on. I can’t have you out
there. Not tonight.”

“When you’re and only child in a family with an only parent, you look at other, bigger families with envy. Mary Alice had a family with a station wagon, a split-level house, and a pool.
But then I looked up and saw Mary Alice’s toes, as she stood at the edged of the diving board. Her second toe lay on top of her big toe on each foot. I had never seen such a thing. I wondered if Mary Alice’s toes would ever prevent her from doing the things she wanted to do in life.
“Look, y’all!” she said, forming her perfect body into a perfect swan’s dive. I decided then that any time I got frustrated with my overall situation in life, mad or jealous of knee socks or a pink canopy bed in a pink room, I’d take a deep breath and think about Mary Alice’s toes. At least I didn’t have Mary Alice’s toes.”
