What Your Typical Super Bowl Sunday Plans Say About You

The Super Bowl is the National Football League’s annual title game (NFL). Since 1966, it has acted as the NFL season’s final game, displacing the NFL Championship Game. The game has been played on the first Sunday in February since 2004, but will switch to the second Sunday in 2022. The Vince Lombardi Trophy is presented to the winning team, named after the eponymous coach who won the first two Super Bowls. Due to the NFL’s restrictions on the usage of the “Super Bowl” trademark, non-sponsoring companies sometimes refer to it as the “big game” or other generic names.

The game was established as part of the NFL’s 1966 merger agreement with the rival American Football League (AFL) to allow their best teams to play for a championship. It was originally known as the AFL–NFL World Championship Game until 1969’s Super Bowl III, when the “Super Bowl” moniker was adopted. From 1967 to 1970, the first four Super Bowls were held prior to the merger, with the NFL and AFL each winning two. Following the 1970 merger, the ten American Football League (AFL) teams and three National Football League (NFL) teams formed the American Football Conference (AFC), while the remaining 13 NFL teams formed the National Football Conference (NFL) (NFC). Since 1971’s Super Bowl V, all games have been between the conference’s two strongest teams, with the NFC leading the AFC 26–25.

Twenty-one (11 NFC, nine AFC) of the NFL’s existing 32 teams have won a Super Bowl, while fourteen (eight AFC, six NFC) have won multiple championships. The New England Patriots and Pittsburgh Steelers of the AFC both have six Super Bowl championships; the Patriots also have the most Super Bowl appearances with 11. The Patriots and the AFC’s Denver Broncos each have five Super Bowl losses. The AFC’s Baltimore Ravens and the NFC’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers are the only franchises to have won two Super Bowls without losing a game. The Cleveland Browns, Houston Texans, and Jacksonville Jaguars of the AFC and the Detroit Lions of the NFC are the only four teams that have not won a Super Bowl.
